Beautified
Published July 1st, 2007 in Life, Thoughts, Books, Belief.Do you know him? Kyan Douglas, the “Grooming Guru” of the Queer Eye, one of the ”50 Most Beautiful People” named by People Magazine, who was trained in cosmetology in the Aveda Institute in New York before entering the show biz.
I bought his book, “Beautified”, in order to gain some insider beauty tips. While the information was all very practical, it’s the section titled “Your Spirit Workout” that really caught my eyes, and touched my heart (strange, I know, touched by a tool book…).
You might think this sounds crazy, but in many ways, your spirit is no different than your abs or your hair or your skin. You need to get it into shape and maintain it. We’re talking pretty on the inside. This doesn’t just happen, people. It’s something you need to consciously work on. Remember, that’s what beautified is all about: looking your best, head to toe, inside and out, because you made it happen. You put the effort into it and got results.
What I do know is that most people neglect their spirit. It’s like a muscle you never exercise because you didn’t know that you could.
One way to work on the inside is to focus on the outside. I’m not talking about your face, body, or hair, but the external world, the physical environment around you. Anything you can do to create a nurturing, positive space for yourself is a terrific tool.
Quite unexpected, right? I’m glad that I’ve got the book.
BTW, if you’re not that into Queer Eye simply because it’s not run by straight guys, or because you think that it’s just another reality true man show, you may have missed quite a bit. Besides the fun and the “make-over” of the participant in each episode, it is indeed a very kind-hearted programme hosted by five very kind-hearted human beings. They have characters and they show true feelings. Recently they have also become more devoted to helping charitable organisations in their show. Do watch an episode.
