Art On Sunday - Lin Feng Mian

Most delighted that many readers like the paintings I posted in the Breathing Space article. They were the works of the infamous late Chinese painter Lin Feng Mian.

May I take this opportunity to share some more of his paintings with you, while also letting you know more about the master?

Lin Feng Mian was born in 1900 and passed away in 1991. He had studied art in France in his early twenties and therefore had integrated the traits of Western and Chinese art in both his ink and oil paintings.

The painter was the pioneer of modern Chinese art. Back to China, he founded the National Academy of Art at the age of 28. Through art education in the school, he brought up new generations of modern Chinese artists.

Yet, his artistic career was full of bitter struggles. In view of political pressure, he had destroyed most of his artworks (over 2,000 pieces) and been imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s.

Some of this art therefore shown his intense emotion towards the pain and struggles he had gone through. Besides famous for this paintings, Lin was also renowned as a human rights advocate.

The artist lost his mother when he was still a child. He had married twice. Yet, his first wife died young and he led a separate life with second wife most of the time. There was therefore always this hint of loneliness and seperation in his paintings. His lady paintings also reflected his ideals and aesthetic values.

Lin Feng Mian’s artistic productions are truly remarkable if one knows how to appreciate this kind of modern Chinese art. You have provided some useful information about the artist. How I wish I could have one of these paintings to hang up!

Great that you like Lin Feng Mian’s paintings. The composition and use of colour of his work are remarkable. Glad that the basic information posted here arouse your interest in Chinese modern art.

Wanna know some market information of Lin’s paintings? Just did a quick search on the internet out of curiousity. The highest price so far is one of his Lily Pond paintings - with auction price at USD 1M.
