Is our life determined by chance?

Sliding Doors made an interesting attempt in answering the question by presenting the parallel stories of Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow).   And it all starts from the sliding doors…

Helen was fired from work that day.  Shocked, she made her way home via the tube.  She boarded the train before the sliding doors closed - and was home early enough to discover her boyfriend’s infidelity…

Helen was fired from work that day.  Shocked, she made her way home via the tube.  She didn’t get through before the sliding doors closed - and was home after her boyfriend’s mistress left…

Lost both her job and love on the same day, Helen gradually picked herself up and began her new life.  She moved, changed the hair style, started her own business and fall in love again…

Lost her job while unable to find a comparable one yet, Helen had to take up a waitress job to support her writer boyfriend - and only to find out that he had fallen into with another woman…

Two possibilities - all determined by that sliding doors?

It’s choice - not chance - that determines your destiny.

~ Jean Nidetch

Despite the circumstances, Helen made her choices - and she could have reacted differently.

I’ve seen half of this film at university once, but everyone was chattering quite loudly and I was very distracted as we were all waiting to be called, one by one, to go do our oral exam.

I suppose we do all wonder: what if…

    I know I do, every day. I think it’s human nature…

    Hi Maartje,

“What if”… Right, what if… Hm, we only live once…

BTW, I used to watch a lot of films during my undergraduate days also - starting from the 1910/20 black and white film, to the Italian realism, to Citizen Kane, to the modern cinema, to Hollywood… I didn’t realise at that moment but am grateful whenever I think about it now. It was and is such a great tour, being introduced to the greatest in history…

Nope…wasn’t the sliding door. Had nothing to do with it. She MADE the decision, to go home, by tube and whether to slip thru the door or not to slip thru. And in every relationship, there are lessons to be learnt….all part of our soul development.

Hi there Moi, nice to hear from you.

I agree with you totally, it’s our choices, not chances that “determine” our life.
