If You Are Reviewing Your Career, And Reckon You Can Do Better Than It Is…
Published August 8th, 2007 in Success, Work, Business, Thoughts, Entrepreneurship, Books.Today I turn a new page.
This is the first day I work on my own. Feeling like pressing the reset button and starting at 0000.
I have thought that this would be the hardest part, starting from Ground Zero. Turns out it is not. (Turns out this is the best part.) The hardest part was when I was making the decision, or, to be more exact, struggling to make the decision.
If you were feeling stuck, struggling, and wondering whether you have any options apart from the 9-5, the duty lists, the organisation charts, you may wish to consult the following books, which have helped dissecting my once seemingly unsolvable dilemma (and hopefully yours):
4-Hour work Week by Tim Ferriss
Doing something unimportant well does not make it important.
Requiring a lot of time does not make a task important.
~ Tim Ferriss
For me, the 4-Hour work Week is an enjoyable read that makes you look hard at your life - Are you doing something need not to be done? Are you working simply for work’s sake (W4W, according to Ferriss)? Are you being efficient but not effective? Are you not making use of the flat world but still performing (repetitive) work that can by automated or outsourced? Is this what you are planning? - Retire only when you can’t work any more?
Those are all difficult questions and therefore I don’t doubt they would offend some - after all it is not easy to face it, right, when somebody tells you that you may have wasted a big truck of your time doing efficiently that which should NOT be done at all…
But that may be exactly why you need the book (and read it with a open-mind). And, BTW, it contains lots of practical information on how to start your online business and work 4 hours a week…
The Greatness Guide by Robin Sharma
If you think something cannot occur in your life, then there’s no way you will take the action required to make that goal a reality. Your “impossibility thinking” manifests itself.
~ Robin Sharma
Do read The Greatness Guide - it talks about getting world class by ordinary people, leading no matter your rank or position - it talks about the greatness in you, in everybody.
I love it when he shared the four-minute mile story. Before 1954, it was believed that no runner could ever break the four-minute mile barrier. Yet, after Roger Bannister broke it, a couple more broke the record, within weeks. It is not what is impossible. It is what you BELIEVE is impossible… What is your four-minute mile?
You’ll See It When You Believe It by Dr. Wayne Dyer
Why do people spend their lives doing things that they do not love? Because they believe in scarcity rather than abundance.
~ Dr. Wayne Dyer
The name of the book is “You’ll see it when you believe it”, not “You’ll believe it when you see it”. It is easy to think that you are stuck, that you don’t have options / this is already the best option. Or, is it? When I read the above quote the first time, I thought there was no way I could do what I love. Now, I am working towards it.
The Secrets of the Millionarie Mind by T. Harv Eker
I know, the name of the book sound very money-minded. Well, it is, and it is not just this.
So I began doing some serious soul-searching. I examined my true beliefs and saw that even though I said I really wanted to be rich, I had some deep-rooted worries about it. Mostly I was afraid. Afraid that I might fail, or worse, succeed and then somehow lose it all. Then I’d really be a schmuck. Worse, I would blow the one thing I had going for me: my “story” that I had all this “potential.” What if I found out I didn’t have what it took and I was destined to a life of struggle?
~ T. Harv Eker
The Secrets of the Millionarie Mind is an interesting book. There is no “practical” guide on how can you make money. It talks about your “blueprint”, your beliefs that you may or may not aware that hinders you from getting rich and becoming successful, and how to unlearn them. It talks about changing from within.
Internet Riches by Scott Fox
I was born an entrepreneur but didn’t realize it until well into my career. Our society, our education system, and my friends and family all consistently pushed me toward “steady jobs” rather than encouraging my dreams of personal and financial freedom. Yet when I landed prestigious and lucrative corporate jobs, I couldn’t understand why I was unhappy…”
~ Scott Fox
Internet Riches is a concise, practical and well-written how-to guide for Internet business newbies. I indeed gain many tips from it while building this blog (and this may be part of the reason why Shine With Grace doesn’t look like a two-month old). If you are considering to launch your own business and wondering whether Internet business is a good option, do consult this book and learn from the experience of those who have already entered the game.

Hi dear,
Other than 360 degree consideration of your life & career, you’ll need courage most to make such a big decision.
All the best with your new life.
Thanks Jacqueline,
It is not as hard as it seemed - once you’re clear that it’s the right direction.
