Art On Sunday - “God’s Architect”: Antoni Gaudi
Published August 12th, 2007 in Travel, Art.I simply found myself lost for words for the architecture of Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926).
He definitely was the “God’s architect”for his works were so unique, mysterious, dream-like, complex and imaginative that they resemble no architecture we see on earth. Gaudi’s earlier works were designed in the style of Gothic and traditional Spanish architectural modes, but he soon developed his own distinct sculptural style.
Every tile, every corridor, every chimney, every balcony… is a piece of art.
A very brief introduction…
Gaudi was born in southern Catalonia, Spain in 1852. He studied architecture in Barcelona in his twenties and built one after another master-pieces(including Casa Batllo, Park Guell, Casa Mila) in the city throughout his career. Since his childhood he showed great interest in observing the nature and analyzing its design - which turn out provided endless inspiration for the architect for his work. Instead of relying on geometric shapes, Gaudi incorporated nature’s angles and curves into his designs.
Due to their uniqueness, Gaudi’s works were not popular at first and even being ridiculted by his peers. He was only supported by the rich industrialist Eusebi Guell at the very beginning. Popularity of his works built up when time passes.
One of the most famous works of Gaudi is the Sagrada Familia, which is still being built as of today. As the architect used no blue print for the project, the construction of the church is extremely difficult after his death, despite the advancement in technology. The Sagrada Familia is planned for completion in 2026. Nevertheless, its structure is recently endangered by the planned construction of a tunnel for a TGV-style high speed train.
Masterpiece…
Casa Batllo
Park Guell
Sagrada Familia
Gaudi is the major reason why I love Barcelona so much. Next time when you visit Spain, don’t miss the architecture by the genius Gaudi in Barcelona.
