The “Glass Balls” Of Our Lives

A while back Dan @ Ledger Pad shared the quote below:

Imagine life is a game in which you are juggling five balls. The balls are called work, family, health, friends, and integrity. And you’re keeping all of them in the air. But one day, you finally come to understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. The other four balls — family, health, friends, integrity — are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it will be irrevocably scuffed, nicked, perhaps even shattered. And once you truly understand the lesson of the five balls, you will have beginnings of balance in your life.

~ James Patterson, Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas

In the past week, this quote kept pop up in my mind when I frequented the hospital visiting my mum.  (Thank goodness she has been discharged after a very successful operation.)

… work is a rubber ball.  If you drop it, it will bounce back.  … family, health, friends, integrity are made of glass…

What is most important in your life? What can you afford to lose, what can’t you afford to lose?  What can be gained back even you lose it, and what can’t be?  What do you hold hear to your heart?

Once you can decide on the priorities, you know how and what and where to devote your time, energy, effort and heart.

When you find your answers, you are in the position to put things in perspective, you will begin to lose interest in arguments that serve no purpose apart from hurting the beloved’s (and yours) feeling; you won’t trade long term trust for short term gain; you will spend quality time with the people you treasure; you will begin to put yourself in the other’s shoes…

Thank you Dan for the beautiful sharing.

Perspective is everything. Of course this year I decided, unequivocally, that family came first no matter what. It is part of the reason that I stand with no regrets today. :)

    A very nice post.

Thanks Jon. Yes, perspective is everything. First things first.
