Are You A Perfectionist?

Being a perfectionist

Are you a perfectionist?

I am one.

And I found that, the constant quest for perfection though brings (pushes for) high quality output, it also backfires.

Sometimes it’s not high quality output it brings, but zero output - for when you expect yourself too high, you are never satisfied, you are hardy happy with what you’ve got - and therefore you doubt yourself always, you keep push yourself to improve, and you intend to lauch the product only when it’s up to your satisfaction, i.e. when it is perfect for you.  And the result is, you never launch it.

Are you a perfectionist suffering from inaction?

Has there been a piece of work that you hesitate to publish because it is not up to your satisfaction?

Has there been a person whom you don’t dare to approach because you’re feeling inferior?

Has there been a relationship which you have not grasped because you kind of feel that it’s just too good to be true?

Have you been too harsh to yourself?

When you expect yourself too high, you may render yourself a self-confidence that is lower than you actually deserve.

A more realistic approach

Windows may have never been lauched if Bill Gates waited till it’s perfect.

No, sometimes you don’t need to wait till it’s perfect.  It never will.  Just go ahead, give your best (best not necessarily equals perfect), pay attention to the feedback, improve, and start the process again.  That’s why we have version 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0…  If v.1.0 has not been released, we don’t have the chance to come to 2.0 for it takes time to develop and it’s the process that counts.

As long as your product can answer the needs of your customers, it is going to sell.

As long as your piece of work speaks to the soul of your audience, it is a good piece of art.

As long as you are honest and true, you are a good companion.
