Karma
Just joined the huge Facebook community and exploring the social network. Am pretty fascinated by the many applications and mini-games being circulated by the users - and the thinking behind the designs of these applications.
One that leads me to think about the topic, Good Karma, today, is the popular Astrology application. On top of daily horoscope reading it offers to its users everyday, I found this “Karma rating” section in the application. Not sure what it’s about, I clicked the tag to find out more, and found the advice which read sth like, “You don’t have karma yet for you’ve not send out any.”
OK. So I sent out a few and the Karma rating in my Facebook increases.
Isn’t that true in real life too?
Karma - the definition and concept
Karma (- “act, action, performance”) is the concept of “action” or “deed” in Indian religions understood as denoting the entire cycle of cause and effect described in Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist philosophies.
The explanation of karma can differ somewhat per tradition. Usually it is believed to be a sum of all that an individual has done, is currently doing and will do. The results or “fruits” of actions are called karma-phala.Karma is not about retribution, vengeance, punishment or reward; karma simply deals with what is. The effects of all deeds actively create past, present and future experiences, thus making one responsible for one’s own life, and the pain and joy it brings to others. In religions that incorporate reincarnation, karma extends through one’s present life and all past and future lives as well. It is cumulative.

Karma, my interpretation: What goes around comes around
I am not a particularly religious person. But I do believe (and from my experience so far confirm) that what goes around tends to come around, and anyhow, it feels much better to send out good deed than angry thoughts. When we come to think about it, it is rather simply and basic, such as:
- When you want other people to be polite to you, be polite yourself.
- When you want others to smile at you, smile first.
- When you are rude and impatient, you tend to get bad service.
- When you bad-mouth someone, you’d found that you’re being bad-mouthed.
- When you’re pre-occupied by angry thoughts, you pick fights with people around.
Why?
The law of attraction at work at different levels:
- Like attracts like- When we studied the concept “energy” in school, we learn that like attracts like. Human beings are basically energy bodies and our thoughts are the energy that we send out. Therefore, believe it or not, we attract what we think about most. When you’re angry, you can easily attract situations that meet your expectation and confirm your feelings. You’ll find spouse, subordinates (or bosses), sales person, strangers behaving nastily. Similarly, when you are feeling content, you tend to discover people being nice and helpful.
- We act what we think- In real life situation, our behaviour reflects what we think and how we feel. When you are feeling inadequate, you walk and speak with little confidence, you don’t even dare to look people in their eyes during your encounters. When you are feeling contented, you simply smile more. When you are truely in love, you become tender.
- People react to how we act- Everything affects everything. How we feel affects how we talk, how we talk affects how we walk - and our every action, our every words, our every tiny facial expression sends out signals to the others what a person we are, and how they should response to us. When you are feeling good, you are relaxed and you smile more. As a result, people would find you approachable and therefore you get more smiles and better services. If you are basically a very scaptical person, that you doubt people’s intention always, people would easily pick up your vibe and find it hard to confide to you, and trust you. At the end of the day, we all get what we expect and you may call it self-fulfilling prophecy.
Therefore, when the situation you are in upsets you, don’t blame the situation, or anybody else, look inside and reflect whether you’re responsible to it too.
Attracting good karma
If what we think about expands, if how we feels affects how we act and if how we act affects how people react to us, why don’t we:
- think good thoughts
- be grateful
- focus on good things rather than bad experiences
- help others
- do what is right
- pay back society whenever possible
- bless others
Feel good, do good and attract good karma.

Good karma and congrats for attaining a PR3 for this blog.
Oops, I should say PR1. I didn’t wait long enough to see the green bar change.
Hi there Markk,
Great to see you around and thanks for the update on page rank!
I like the quote. It’s quite true, but, also if we believe in karma - no good dead goes unrewarded in the long term.
And we all shine on,
Like the moon, and the stars, and the sun.
Yeah, we all shine on
On and on, on and on, on and on.
Would be so neat if you could link the John Lennon Instant Karma song to play upon uploading your site.
Hi Tejvan,
Yes. And, the content feeling of doing the right thing is already a reward too.
Hi Todd,
Thanks for suggestion. Great song.
