What If You Are (Feeling) Stuck

sunny

It may be a writer’s (blogger’s) block.  Or, you still can’t find the solution after doing the same experiment the 100th times.  Or, you’ve been making cold calls from nine to nine but hasn’t been able to make a deal…

We all have been there.

What are your strategies when you’re feeling stuck?

My recommendations would be:

  • Step back - When you’re using the same logic / approach on the same problem and can’t solve it after trying long enough, chances are there is a blind spot in your theory - and carry on in the same direction may never yield you a result. Take a break to get some fresh air and idea.  Remember:  Continue to ride the wrong bus won’t get you to your desired destiny, it may drag you further from your goal.  Make sure you’re on the right direction and your actions align with your goal.
  • Do something else- You never know.  With some luck you may find some inspiration on your problem from a totally different topic or activities.  What I usually do is whenever feel stuck, that I know no matter how harder and longer I try, I won’t be able to get the outcome right away, I will grab a magazine on a totally unrelated topic. And bingo, a quote or a picture from the magazine would suddenly becomes a key for my next problem solving.  So next time, give your mind some stimulation.  You may discover a new perspective.
  • Quieting your mind - You must have had this experience:  After spending hours on the same task in vain, your mind comes up with an excellent idea / solution when you go to the washroom / take a shower / fetch a glass of water / take a walk in the park…  The reason is our brain is far more creative when the brain waves slow down.  Instead of pushing yourself even harder, try stop thinking about the same issue for a few minutes - while you consciously put it down, your subconscious will pick it up and continue to work on it when you’re relaxing.
  • Talk with a friend, talk with yourself - In addition to seeking a third opinion,  next time when you consult a friend, try to pay attention to what you say, how you describe the situation, how do you feel, what outcome do you expect.  When you become the observer of yourself, you may find that you have the answers yourself, just that you’re not aware of it, or you don’t want to admit it.  Be honest and you’ll find the answer at your door.

    Another wonderful post! :)
Your 4 recommendations are excellent and their not necessarily the easiest things to do. Sometimes when we’re in that position we may want to close ourselves off, and it’s hard to quiet the mind, so i like that your suggestions are active. :)
