A Strong Enough Purpose
Published November 24th, 2007 in Psychology, Success, Life, Thoughts, Belief.Don’t you give up easily?
- So you have set this goal of exercising 3 days a week. After getting up at 6 sharp in the first week, you felt the inertia growing, you got up later and later and in the third week, you started to miss the schedule…
- Or, you finally started your own small business and the sales did not catch up as expected. In the thrid month, you were considering to quit.
- Since age 6, you’ve always wanted to learn to play the piano, but never got the chance. Finally this year, you began taking lessons - and found that playing the piano, especially when you were still a beginner, was indeed pretty boring. You wonder whether you could linger till you could play any sexy songs.
Don’t you give up easily?
When we start something, we always start with all enthusiasm. Just that, most of the time, we drop the once serious idea much sooner than we thought we would.
Why?
One big reason is we don’t have a strong enough purpose to support us.
Once I have met this friend who has published a book. He said that we has been writing this book for four years but have never been able to finish it and got it printed. He started, but then he procrastinated.
Two years ago, he finally have the book printed. Why? Because he was at that Phuket beach when the tsunami attacked the coastal area of Thailand on Christmas in 2004. He survived - and got to understand that he didn’t necessary have time to procrastinate - therefore he finally finished the book.
If you’ve ever started a habit, and found yourself considering to quit before giving it enough try, ask yourself why you started it at first place, and examine your reasons / purposes closely. You will give up more easily, when you don’t really have a strong enough purpose. Think closely, what would it cost you if you quit, and what are the goodies if you persist, including the impact on yourself, as well as whether it can help you serve others at the broader context. If you can identify a strong reason, you will carry on.
