He who fails to plan, plans to fail.

~ Proverb

We human beings like to jump into action.

I remember when I had once taken part in this team building workshop, in which we formed groups to perform task after task, all within very tight time limits.  Every time, and I mean  every time, whenever the instructor has delivered the instruction sheet, the teammates would scan it through very quickly and then jump into action.  And every time, I mean almost every time, we acted too hastily that we missed some very important (sometimes obvious) hints in the instruction - and therefore wasted time in searching for something that is not important, or procedures that scored very little points.

And indeed we do that often in our lives.

We can’t quite allow ourselves to sit still, figure out what we really want, what is our goal, what we want to achieve and how to get to the goal (if there is a clear goal).  We can’t wait to jump into action.  We would rather do something, anything, instead of sit down and plan.  Just like, when we were in a queue and the queue not quite move, we would rather switch queue, instead of wait in the original line.  At least we have done something, we thought.

Well, sometimes, or, mostly, jumping into action doesn’t get us to our utopia easier and earlier, but quite the contrary.

Why?

Because without a clear goal and a plan, we can waste time on non-essential tasks, we have to rectify our course often, we easily gone astray and therefore spending more time in finding out the right direction.

When you go window shopping without a shopping list, most of the time you would find yourselves buying things you don’t really need.

This may also be true for our lives.

Have a plan.
