Do You Really Know Yourself?
Published February 5th, 2008 in Life, Thoughts.Do you really know yourself?
We think that we understand ourselves. We know what adjustives to use when describing ourselves to others. I am an introvert / extrovert / honest / smart / funny / shy person…
Do you really know yourself?
Sometimes we over-estimate ourselves:
You thought that you are a big person with a big heart - until you found that you couldn’t really forgive your best friend for running off with you girl.
You thought that you are the most honest person in the world - until you’ve made that mistake and for the first time in your life wonder whether you should really tell the truth.
Sometimes we under-estimate ourselves:
You thought you are shy, extremely shy, until in that final job interview you found yourself presented the business case flawlessly.
You thought you are lousy with any physical activities, until you discovered yoga, and finally performed the head-stand.
Do we really know ourselves?
Sometimes it’s like taking the math test in high school - you only know whether you understand that theory when you solve the math.
We only get to know who we truly are when we are tested.
It is very easy to be honest and fair, and loving, and kind during good times.
It is when we are challenged that we know how we cope - whether we play fair, or we choose to cheat; whether we stay calm, or we get mad; whether we are a leader, or we lose focus, whether we are willing to share, or we only care about ourselves.
It is during difficult situations that our true character shows.
