Focus Vs Multi-tasking
Published February 13th, 2008 in Work, Thoughts.Don’t you multi-task?
I do. All the time. Can’t help not to, while there are so many things on the to-do list waiting me to cross them out.
Does multi-tasking efficient?
Hm…
Sometimes. Sometimes yes, sometimes, not quite.
Sometimes there is merits in multi-tasking - especially when there is idle time of one task.
Nevertheless, most of the time, multi-tasking slows us down.
The crunch is: We allow our attention to divert while multi-tasking.
While you should be focusing on writing your proposal, you let yourself also answering friend’s msn, checking the stock prices on Yahoo Finance and replying incoming emails… At the same time it seems that you are accomplishing 4-5 tasks. In fact, you are using more time and energy doing them all at once - for whenever you shift from one task to another, your mind have to pick up and process a new set of information - and the more tasks you take up at one time, the more time and energy you spend on shifting your attention, while running the risk of missing important details along the way.
When driving, try not answering the phone.
When working on your pc, try not to open so many “windows”.
When talking with your lover, husband/wife/children, try not watch TV at the same time.
We are all busy. We all like to achieve more in less time.
Yet I found that whenever I allow myself to let my attention shift to something else while I am doing one task, and worry about whether I can get all the stuff done, I end up wasting time and energy worrying, completing very little on all the things I am trying to cope.
Focus on what you’re doing, respect it, give it as much time and energy it deserves. At the end of the day, you’ll find that you product better results with more efficiency.
