I Am Glad That I Can Help
Published February 20th, 2008 in Gratitude, Happiness, Love, Thoughts. It was Chinese New Year last week. And, most grateful that I could spend my holiday in a different way - a meaningful way.
A group of 230 people, walked for 140 km in 5 days for 8 hours a day from Hong Kong to Guang Zhou, China to raise fund for the improvement of the education in the hilly areas of China. The walk, being it’s 15th times, was organised by “Sowers Action“, the charity which based in Hong Kong, devoted for the cause. Due to other commitments, I could make the whole trip. But I was glad I catch half of it.
It was tough, the weather was particularly cold this year, and it was such a long long way. On my first day I walked for 35 km. Never have walked this long in my life - and hurt my knees on the spot. Many people in the team has suffered from many minor injury / muscle fatigue. Yet, no one quit.
Before the trip, a friend asked me: You can always raise fund, but why should you guys walk so long?
Participated in the event myself, I now have a better why - there is a difference. For in those poor hilly provinces, the kids had to walk hours to and from school daily, while the school are still very primitive, if not dangerous. Our 140km, indeed, was no comparison.

In the team, there were at least 3 participants aged over 80. And they walked from start till they reached the finish line.
Uncle Tung in the picture below has participated in this event for 12 years non-stop. Why? Because when he was young he didn’t have the chance to receive proper education due to the war. He hoped that he could do his best to ensure the kids in the poorer areas won’t miss the opportunity like he did.
Spending time with this group of people for such a cause was already a blessing. It made you think deeper about life.
Sometimes was just forget how lucky we are. We take things for granted. We complain about trivial things. When you really come to think about it, you could be born in that situation…
I am glad that I can help.
